BIOGRAPHY

Jorge Puerta’s versatile repertoire spans some of the most iconic roles in the Italian operatic tradition. He has brought to life characters such as Mario Cavaradossi/Tosca, Calaf/Turandot and Rodolfo/La bohème by Giacomo Puccini, as well as Radamès/Aida, Don Alvaro/La Forza del destino, Gabriele Adorno/Simon Boccanegra and Alfredo Germont/La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, and the title role in Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano, cementing his place among the most compelling dramatic tenors of his generation.

As a member of the soloist ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Puerta stood out in major roles including Calaf, Radamès, and Gabriele Adorno. International engagements have taken him to the Semperoper Dresden, Palacio de la Opera de A Coruña, the Lithuanian National Opera House, and Austria’s Oper im Steinbruch Festival, especially celebrated for his performance as Radamès. He also delivered a remarkable performance as Andrea Chénier during the 2023 St. Gallen Festival; his portrayal not only showcased his vocal prowess but also solidified his reputation as a distinguished tenor capable of bringing depth and authenticity to complex operatic characters.

Puerta’s musical foundation began with his formative years in Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar National Youth Choir, followed by advanced studies at Madrid’s Reina Sofía School of Music under the “Alfredo Kraus” vocal chair, guided by the renowned tenor Francisco Araiza, who became his mentor and friend. His talent and dedication have earned him numerous awards, including recognition as Lyrical Artist of the Year in Spain at the VI El Suplemento Awards (2022).

REVIEWS

La forza del destino by G. Verdi at the Aalto-Theater Essen (Nov. 2024)

“Jorge Puerta also plays Alvaro, whose brilliant tenor, however, overflows with pure love in a masterful way. He is undoubtedly the star of the Essen production. Sometimes lyrical, sometimes powerful, but in every moment, he handles the murderous role, which is often so high, with great stamina…”
– Christoph Schulte, Neue Musikzeitung | NMZ [translated from German]

Aida by G. Verdi at Oper im Steinbruch / Opernfestspiele St. Margarethen (Jul. 2024)

“One is mostly impressed vocally as well: Leading the way is Jorge Puerta, originally from Venezuela, as Radamés, with an exceptionally beautiful, powerful tenor and immense pitch stability. He is also capable of producing delicate, lyrical tones.” – Helmut Christian Mayer, Kurier [translated from German]

La bohème by G. Puccini at the Freilichtspielen in St. Gallen (Jun. 2025)

“Jorge Puerta’s vocal style as the painter Mario Cavaradossi is also rather bold, but the baritone foundation of his tenor lends the character great dramatic potential. Puerta’s acting presence grows over the course of the evening, and when he sings Cavaradossi’s aria “E lucevan le stelle” in the third act with great fervor and a powerful high note, and the stars truly sparkle, as described in the text, then you’re in the right place at the right time.”
– Georg Rudiger, Schwaebische [translated from German]
