Stage Director Cecilia Ligorio Opens October with Mozart’s Don Giovanni in Seville and Scarlatti’s Mitridate Eupatore in Palermo

Stage Directors

This October, stage director Cecilia Ligorio takes on two major new productions in Spain and Italy.

At the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, she directs Mozart’s Don Giovanni (Oct. 4, 8, 10, 11, 12), an opera that unfolds in the very city where the performances take place. Ligorio, whose staging of the work in Cologne was praised for its psychological depth, explores Don Juan’s elusive identity — a figure both seductive and destructive — ultimately defeated only by supernatural forces and the dignity of the women he scorns. The production is conducted by Iván López-Reynoso / Mariano García Valladares.

Ligorio also directs Teatro Massimo’s new production of Scarlatti’s Mitridate Eupatore (Oct. 5, 7, 9, 12), conducted by Giulio Prandi with scene designs by Gregorio Zurla. Based on a libretto by Girolamo Frigimelica Roberti, inspired by Sophocles’ Electra and Euripides’ Electra, the work brings to the stage a world of dynastic power struggles.
