BIOGRAPHY

Bulgarian bass Petar Naydenov, currently based in Vienna, began his musical journey as a violinist before dedicating himself to vocal studies at the National Academy of Music in Sofia. He further honed his skills under the guidance of two of Bulgaria’s most legendary artists, soprano Ghena Dimitrova and bass Nicola Ghiuselev.

Naydenov made his operatic debut at the age of 24 in the title role of Don Giovanni at the Sofia National Opera, quickly gaining recognition for his rich, resonant voice and commanding stage presence. Over the years, he has become a frequent guest at European opera houses, performing leading bass roles in a wide repertoire spanning Verdi, Mozart, Gounod, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, and the Russian and Slavic traditions.

Between 2022 and 2024, Naydenov sang Ramfis in Aida and Padre Guardiano in La forza del destino at the Landestheater Linz, Ferrando in Il trovatore at Opera Bergen, and Nilakantha in Lakmé at the Sofia Opera.

He had also performed at the Vienna Volksoper in roles such as Ferrando, Hagen (Wagner/Loriot’s Ring an einem Abend), Timur, Sparafucile, Colline, Angelotti, a.o.

His Italian debut was at Teatro Verdi in Trieste as Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, followed by Iolanta at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, as well as in Manon Lescaut and Andrea Chénier at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari.

A passionate interpreter of Slavic repertoire, Naydenov has recorded Rachmaninov Opera Highlights – the Old Gypsy in Aleko (Naxos USA, 2007), Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen (Naxos, 2021), and Mussorgsky’s Sorochyntsi Fair (SWR, 2022).

REVIEWS

Aleko by S. Rachmaninoff at Teatro Massimo Palermo (Nov. 2025)

“Aleko viene inaugurato dal potente racconto del Vecchio zingaro di Petar Naydenov, presenza imponente e dolente nella magnifica proiezione di una voce tipicamente slava.”
– Giuseppe Montemagno, rivistamusica.com

“Special mention must also go to bass Petar Naydenov in the role of The Old Gypsy, Zemfira’s father, who made what must have been one of the most unexpected, if not comical, introductions in an opera. He was tasked with having to sit motionless for some time beneath a covering before eventually being revealed seated in a bath, near naked, clutching a transistor radio. He then delivers his aria which sets the tenet of the whole opera, “Volshebnoy siloy pesnopenya” (The Old Gypsy’s story), a narrative piece delivered with treacle-rich resonance, recalling his own past love for a woman who abandoned him and their young daughter, Zemfira, for another man. Not just a fine voice but a tricky piece of physical maneuvering, rising from the bathtub and precariously stepping out, all the while telling his tale while being towel dried by his daughter.”
– Mike Hardy, operawire.com

Rusalka by A. Dvořák at Opera Varna (Aug. 2025)

Bass Petar Naydenov, in the role of Vodnik, Rusalka’s father, was the pillar of the production. This role, gifted by the composer with expressive melodic lines, is imbued with emotions of fatherly pain, concern, and compassion. Naydenov was superb in his dramatic portrayal and vocal interpretation, with his rich bass timbre and effortlessly expressive singing.”
– Yuliana Karaatanasova, kultura.bg

La forza del destino by G. Verdi at Landestheater Linz (Feb. 2023)

“Petar Naydenov, … ein durchschlagskräftiger Bass, der als Pater Guardiano der Leonora Asyl gewährt, darf hingegen Herz zeigen und warme, beruhigende Töne verströmen lassen.”
Manfred A. Schmid, onlinemerker.com
