BIOGRAPHY
Marcelo Álvarez’s great talent, discovered by Giuseppe Di Stefano, takes him soon to Europe where he debuts in La Sonnambula at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, quickly followed by his singing predominately in the French and Belcanto repertoire before naturally progressing into Verismo and Verdi.
His intense and prestigious career has led him to all the world’s major opera houses and renowned international festivals, including Royal Opera House Covent Garden, New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, Teatro Real Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, Opernhaus Zürich, La Scala Milan, Vienna State Opera and Chicago Lyric Opera.
His repertoire is vast and follows the natural vocal evolution that over the years has brought him from a Belcanto repertoire, through the French repertoire, to a Lyric and Verismo repertoire, among which the most significant interpretations are Edgardo/Lucia di Lammermoor, Gennaro/Lucrezia Borgia, Alfredo/La Traviata, Duca di Mantova/Rigoletto, the title role in Werther, Des Grieux/Manon, Doctor Faust/Faust, Rodolfo/La Bohème.
His current operatic repertoire includes: Don José/Carmen, Cavaradossi/Tosca, Manrico/Il Trovatore, Radames/Aida, Riccardo/Un Ballo in Maschera, the title role in Andrea Chénier, Canio/Pagliacci, Turiddu/Cavalleria Rusticana, Des Grieux/Manon Lescaut, Calaf/Turandot, Maurizio/Adriana Lecouvreur, Enzo Grimaldi/La Gioconda, Don Alvaro/La forza del destino, Dick Johnson/La fanciulla del West and Luigi/Il Tabarro.
He has collaborated with some of the most prestigious conductors including Zubin Metha, Lorin Maazel, James Levine, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Antonio Pappano, Daniel Oren, Marco Armiliato, Sir. Simon Rattle, Riccardo Chailly, Marcello Viotti, Renato Palumbo, Philippe Jordan, Gianandrea Noseda and Nicola Luisotti.
