Internationally celebrated for his contributions to both opera and the concert stage, Italian conductor Giuseppe Finzi has built lasting collaborations with many of the world’s foremost opera houses.

BIOGRAPHY

Giuseppe Finzi holds degrees in Piano from the Conservatorio “N. Piccinni” – Bari, Orchestra conducting, Chamber vocal music at Conservatorio “G. Verdi” – Milano, and a Master’s in conducting at the Accademia Chigiana – Siena.

After a long experience in the music staff of the Teatro alla Scala, where he worked alongside Riccardo Muti, he made his debut in 2003 with Tosca at the Teatro Rendano-Cosenza, which was followed by productions of La traviata, L’elisir d’amore, Madama Butterfly, Rigoletto, Carmen, and Così fan tutte.

His debut with L’elisir d’amore and La bohème in 2008 started a long relationship with the San Francisco Opera, serving also as Resident Conductor from 2011 until 2015. During his tenure, he has conducted more than 100 performances of Aida, Turandot, Entführung aus dem Serail, Faust, La Fanciulla del West, Carmen, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, La traviata, Rigoletto, as well as new productions of Il barbiere di Siviglia (dir. E. Sagi), La bohème (dir. J. Caird), Don Pasquale (dir. L. Pelly), and symphonic concerts.

In 2012 Carmen at the Deutsche Oper Berlin marked his German debut and the beginning of an international career that brought him on the podium of some of the most important opera houses in the world such as: Teatro San Carlo – Naples (The nutcracker, L’elisir d’amore), Teatro Massimo – Palermo (new production of Rigoletto, dir. H. Brockhaus), Gran Teatre del Liceu – Barcelona (new production of Il barbiere di Siviglia, dir. E. Sagi, La fille du regiment), Bregenzer Festspiele (new production of Turandot, dir. M.A. Marelli), Korean National Opera (new productions of Les Pêcheurs de persles – dir. J.L. Grinda, double bill Pagliacci / Il tabarro – dir. F. Grazzini), Teatro de la Maestranza – Sevilla (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Opéra de Monte-Carlo (Nabucco), Teatro Regio – Torino (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Teatro Petruzzelli – Bari (new production of Madama Butterfly – dir. F. Ceresa), Quincena musical de San Sebastian (Madama Butterfly), Opéra Nice (Les pêcheurs de perles), Teatro Carlo Felice – Genova (Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci), Royal Opera House – Muscat (new production of La bohéme – dir. He conducted for the first time in Europe Marco Tutino’s La Ciociara, directed by F. Zambello and starring A.C. Antonacci in the title role, production broadcast by RAI-Italy from Teatro Lirico – Cagliari.

Giuseppe Finzi is also active in symphonic repertoire, having worked with orchestras such as Real Orquesta Sinfónica – Sevilla, Orquesta de Galicia, Wiener Symphoniker, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Essener Philharmoniker, Orchestra del Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Gürzenich Orchester, Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, PKF – Prague Philharmonia, San Francisco Opera Orchestra, Tatarstan Symphony Orchestra, Accademia del Teatro alla Scala, and Evgeny Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra – Moscow.

Professor at the Conservatorio “G. Verdi” – Como, since 2023, Giuseppe Finzi has also been teaching conducting at the Summer Opera Workshops in Orvieto.
