BIOGRAPHY

Mezzo-soprano Christina Jønsi graduated from the Norwegian Academy of Opera in 2021.

After her studies, she joined the Young Artist Programme at the Norwegian National Opera season 21/22, where she performed Mércèdes in Carmen, Herdswoman in Jenůfa, and Juno in Orfée aux Enfers. She returned the very next season as a guest soloist, as Die Zweite Magd in Elektra, directed by Ole Anders Tandberg, and conducted by Petr Popelka. In November 2023, she performed the role of Ursula in David Bruce’s Nothing, with director Martin Lyngbo and conductor David Maiwald. In January, she made her debut in the main role as Hänsel in the revival of director Alexander Mørk-Eidems Hänsel und Gretel, with conductor Leo Hussain.

In 2024, Christina made her debut at Kristiansund Opera as Magdelone in Holberg’s Den Stundesløse, music composed by Edvard F. Bræin. In March the same year, she also made her highly anticipated debut at the Bergen National Opera, as The Younger Woman in Asle og Alida, libretto by Nobel Prize winner in literature Jon Fosse, composer Bent Sørensen, and director Sophia Jupither. This role also marked her international debut, as this production hit the stage at The Royal Danish Opera in May 2025.

In addition to the operatic repertoire, Christina is also a sought-after concert singer. She has performed Mozart’s Requiem multiple times at different venues, in October 2024 also with the Kristiansand Philharmonic Orchestra. She also has a passion for the music of Bach, having performed the Christmas Oratorio and several cantatas, and in April 2025, she sang her first St. John’s Passion with Cæciliaforeningen.

Her most recent and upcoming projects in 25/2026 and beyond include: the role of Herlovs-Marte in Bræin’s Anne Pedersdotter at Kristiansund Opera, Handel’s Messiah with the Kristiansand Philharmonic Orchestra, Bach’s Magnificat and Cantata BWV 131 with the Arctic Philharmonic, Mozart’s Requiem at the Kopervik Kirke, Karmøy, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle w. the Oslo Bach Choir, and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio w. Cæciliaforeningen.

REVIEWS

Asle & Alida at the Royal Danish Opera (May – Jun. 2025)

“Exceptionally good is Christina Jønsi as the dangerous, seductive young woman who wants Asle to stay but rejects his woman – her dramatic mezzo-soprano is worthy of a Wagnerian heroine.”
Søren Kassebeer, Berlingske.dk [translated from Danish]

“Perhaps the best was Christina Jønsi in the role of the younger woman, whose true nature Jønsi’s fine voice did not attempt to conceal.”
P.N., Årsskriftet Critique [translated from Danish]

Asle & Alida at the Bergen National Opera (Mar. – Apr. 2025)

“Quickly following him was The Younger Woman (Christina Jønsi) who auditioned for the role of a harlot without a heart and firmly nailed it, upstaging all the others in vocal performance.”
– Christopher Woodley, Bachtrack

“Christina Jønsi also gives a strong performance as The Younger Woman, seducing in a distorted waltz rhythm.”
– Aksel Dalmo Tollåli, Aftenposten and Aftonbladet [translated from Norwegian]

Hänsel und Gretel at the Norwegian Opera & Ballet (Jan. – Feb. 2025)

“Mezzo-soprano Christina Jønsi delivers beautiful singing and playful acting in the challenging trouser role as Hänsel.”
– Johanne Elster Hanson, Morgenbladet [translated from Norwegian]
