REVIEWS

Madama Butterfly at the Irish National Opera – November 2025

“Many generations boast of having been in the presence of a real talent, and Celine Byrne truly reigns in our era. Her Butterfly is a vocal and dramatic tour de force. Her commanding on-stage presence never falters in over two and a half hours of musical prowess. Her dynamic and dramatic range illuminated the challenging score in a performance to be spoken about for many years to come.”
– Brian Merriman, nomoreworkhorse.com

“Satellites circling soprano Celine Byrne who is peerless as a vibrant Cio-Cio-San. From impressionable ingénue to passionate mother, Byrne infuses Cio-Cio-San with youthful intensity and openheartedness, and her singing is superb.”
– Chris O’Rourke, theartsreview.com

“Butterfly is one of Celine Byrne’s signature roles and she gave a towering performance. She portrayed Cio-Cio San as a determined and resilient character, able to withstand being ostracised by members of her own community while at the same time showing resourcefulness and a steely determination. Byrne brought a rich, opulent tone, powerful top notes and moments of exquisite ethereal beauty to the vocal line. She was mesmerising in the great love duet at the end of Act I. She sang ‘Un bel di’ with an increasing sense of rapture and intensity while probing the melancholy undercurrents of the aria.”
– Robert Beattie, Seen and Heard International

Madama Butterfly at the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen – September 2024

“It must be said that Celine Byrne embodies Cio-Cio-San with a simplicity and sincerity that command admiration. She is admirably credible as a teenager in love as well as a mature woman, dignified in abandonment. Her ductile, fluid soprano, never forced or pressed – despite an orchestra that is sometimes too present – enjoys a wonderfully natural delivery. Even in the most famous arias like “Un bel di vedremo”, she abstains from the slightest seductive effect, as in her serious, luminous, and obstinate presence.”

– Tania Bracq, forumopera.com [Translated from French]

“First of all: the performance of Madama Butterfly that is currently on at Opera Vlaanderen features excellent singing. Celine Byrne in particular is convincing in a sometimes heavenly way in the title role.”

– Stepan Moens De Morgan

“Then there is the performance. I cannot help but praise it. Byrne convinced me most of all with how quickly she could jump between an extremely vocal purity, and then bring to her voice a kind of speaking dynamic that spoke of character. Her verismo singing is perfect in Puccini with Byrne’s velvety sound. This cast was a total combination that is certainly worthy of all praise.”
