Niklas Walentin, Danish/Swiss, born in 1994, began playing violin at the age of six. He has a unique style of playing, which combines all the best in both tradition and innovation.
Niklas Walentin is from august 2015 studying Advanced Diploma as Soloist on The Royal Danish Academy of Music with Professor Eszter Haffner.
He is at the same time studying Advanced Diploma as Chamber musician on The Royal Danish Academy of Music with his Piano trio, Trio Vitruvi, at Professor Tim Frederiksen class.
Earlier, he has been studying Master Degree of Performing Arts with Professor Sergej Krylov, Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano. Studies with the violinist and composer Søren Elbæk, and studied with and participated in master classes with Sylvie Gazeau, Anker Buch, Odin Rathnam, Gerhard Schultz and Hilary Hahn.
Niklas Walentin has appeared as a soloist with the Danish Radio Symphonic Orchestra, Copenhagen Phil/Tivoli Copenhagen Phil, Aarhus Symphonic Orchestra, Odense Symphonic Orchestra, South Jutlands Symphonic Orchestra and represented Denmark at several chamber music festivals such as Usedom in Germany, Baastad in Sweden, and XIX International Music Festival in Ukraine.
In March 2014 Niklas Walentins first CD was released: Solo - with works by Bach, Paganini, Ysaÿe, Nielsen, Reger and Nørholm. Niklas’s second CD was released in 2015, connected to his recital in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. The CD contains works by Carl Nielsen. Niklas Walentin has Carl Nielsen very close to his heart, and very often has Carl Nielsen's works for violin on the program. Niklas third CD is with the American composer Lou Harrison's violin concerto for violin and percussion ensemble, release 2016 on Naxos International.
Niklas Walentin is beside his solo career, a very experienced chamber musician. With Trio Vitruvi he is touring from the locals of Denmark to the far east of China. Trio Vitruvi, founded 2013, won 1st prize and ‘Audience Favorite’ prize in the National Danish Radio Chamber Music Competition 2014, and 1st prize in Jurmala International Chamber Music competition. Trio Vitruvi has from 2015 been accepted in ECMA, European Chamber Music Academy.
Trio Vitruvi has twice visited St. Petersburg with concerts at the Mariinsky Theater and the Philharmonia, Sale Cortot in Paris and future concerts include the Wigmore Hall.
Talent of the Year - and other awards
In 2013 he received the Danish Radio P2 Talent Award with a live transmission in television and radio, solo and together with the violinist Nikolaj Znaider in Bach’s Double Concerto for two violins.
Niklas Walentin has twice received The Sonning Talent Prize and The Jacob Gade Talent Prize for young musicians. He was awarded as Soloist of the year 2013 at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Niklas Walentin received The Danish Critics Award, with a following concert with Elgar’s Violin Concert in Tivoli Concert Hall with Tivoli Copenhagen Phil and the conductor Mario Venzago.
2013 – 2015 the prestigious scholarship The Young Elite was given to Niklas Walentin from Danish Art Council.
Winner of numerous competitions
Niklas Walentin has participated in and won many competitions. In 2012 Niklas Walentin was triple winner in The 9th Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition winning the Second Prize in the competition, The Carl Nielsen Prize for best performance of Carl Nielsen's works, and the Prize for best performance of a contemporary work, Ib Nørholm’s Ménage à Trois, which was composed specially for this competition.
